Community Outreach Center
In early 2001 the church purchased an old derelict cinder block building that, over the years had been used by various businesses such as: office space, a beauty shop, a print shop and various other uses. In late November 2001, after seven months of intensive remodeling and repair, the building was ready to become an outreach ministry for the church for helping poor, needy families in the surrounding area. Items to be supplied were furniture, appliances and other general household items. The Outreach Center staff is an all volunteer operation, including many seniors of the congregation as well as a few non-members. Various advertising methods have been used to acquaint the public with this ministry and donation support from both the church and the public has been outstanding, The Outreach Center is open for business four hours a day (9:00-11:00 AM and 1:30-3:30 PM) five days a week. Referrals are required from some agency in town and an application is then completed at the Center. The applicants are then contacted by special volunteers called Facilitators who make specific arrangements to help the applicant at a mutually convenient time. After a fairly slow start, the Outreach Center currently has about 35 regular and rotating volunteers who serve an average of approximately 15 needy families per month. During the past 10 years approximately 1,500 needy families, including fire victims, have been helped through the Outreach Center. God has richly blessed this ministry and to Him goes all the glory, praise and honor for its success. |
