MULCOCK RANCH

PENASCO SPRING RIVER FLYFISHING
CLUB
![]()
Some of the best things in life
are unexpected. For example, who would expect to find a prime, spring-fed
trout stream in the sem-arid foothills of southestern New Mexico? Who would
expect to drive only 2 hours from
El Paso or Las Cruces and find a trout stream whose chilly waters do not
exceed 59 degrees in the summer yet never freeze in the winter? Would you
expect to find a spring creek that yields wild Rainbows and Browns in excess
of 5 pounds within a 4-hour drive of Midland, Lubbock, Albuquerque, or
Santa Fe? Well---expect the unexpected---this is your chance.

The Mulcock Ranch is locted 15 miles east of Mayhill, New Mexico on US 82 at an elevation of 5700 feet. Fishermen can enjoy summer temperatures that rarely exceed 85 degrees, yet often reach 65 degrees on sunny, winter days. This spring-fed stretch of the Penasco River meanders through the ranch for more than 5 miles and ranges from still, deep pools to magnificent 40' waterfalls. Hatches of baetis, tricos, and mayflies are plentiful year round and caddis hatches normally occur in the evenings. Both dry flies and nymphs yield wild Browns and Rainbows to anglers of all skill levels. The thought of wild trout in a clear mountain spring creek whets the appetite of all fly fishermen.
We are proud to announce the formation of the Penasco Spring River Flyfishing Club. This is a limited access, catch and release, quality water fishery allowing only artificial flies with a single, barbless hook. Each member will be allowed to keep 1 fish over 22" per year. By limiting memberships, the fishing pressure of recent years will be greatly reduced.

The cabin has been remodeled and enlarged and
is available for overnight lodging at nominal rates. For more information about the river and fishing, check out the link below:
