*Employees are eligible for a 2% to 5% increase annually based on performance as measured through the evaluation process until reaching the top of the pay scale.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Applicant must be 21 years of age at time of hire.
  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent.
  • Applicant must pass a rigid background check.
    • Applicant cannot have been convicted of any felonies, nor a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude.
    • Applicant cannot have a conviction for Driving While Intoxicated (D.W. I.) within the past seven years.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver’s License.
  • Applicant must be able to pass a written entrance exam & physical agility test.

  • Must obtain certification as a State of New Mexico Police Officer prior to obtaining non-probationary status.

Department Information:

 

  • The Artesia Police Department’s authorized strength is 32 officers, including Public Safety Director.

 

  • The Artesia Police Department provides a take home patrol vehicle for each officer. Each vehicle is fully equipped for patrol functions.

 

  • All newly hired officers are outfitted with a complete uniform, including leathers. The cost is paid by the city.

 

  • Officers have the choice of providing their own weapon, from an approved list, or having one issued by the department. The Artesia Police Department currently provides a Sig Sauer 45mm semi-automatic to those officers who choose not to provide their own weapon.

 

  • Officers have access to the firing range, gymnasium, weight room and other facilities at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) located in Artesia.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must possess all of the skills and abilities listed under this section on the job description to be considered for this position.

 

  • High school diploma or GED. 
  • Must posses and maintain a valid New Mexico driver license or above at time of hire. 
  • Must read, write and speak the English language.
  • Must be able to speak clearly and distinctly.
  • Must be able to do simple math.
  • Must be willing and able to learn to operate a calculator, Unicom radio and fuel aircraft.
  • Must perform other tasks as assigned.
  • Must be willing to work odd hours and weekends.
  • Must be willing to meet the public.

§         Ability to operate tractor and mower deck

§         Knowledge of tractor and equipment hydraulic systems

§         Ability operate aircraft refueling equipment

§         Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.

§         Ability of perform manual labor requiring extensive physical exertion and prolonged exposure to the environment.

§         Ability to receive and follow oral and written instructions.

§         Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

§         Ability to perform tasks requiring manual dexterity.

§         Skill in the use of a variety of hand and power tools.

§         Skill in the safe operation and use of assigned equipment and tools.

§         Ability to work odd hours including nights and weekends as needed.
